47 Subanen trained on Basic Handloom Weaving to revive weaving in Zamboanga Sibugay
A total of 47 Subanen participants from across Zamboanga Sibugay successfully completed a five-day Basic Handloom Weaving Training held from February 16 to 20, 2026, at the Provincial Capitol Hall in Ipil.

The training was spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), in partnership with the DOST Region IX through the Provincial Science and Technology Office of Zamboanga Sibugay, and the Provincial Government of Zamboanga Sibugay. The initiative was implemented under the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program.
The training marks a key step in the launch of the project, “Revitalization of Suba-Weave Through Hybrid Handloom Weaving and Natural Dyes Innovation Hub for the Subanen in Zamboanga Sibugay.” This seeks to preserve and strengthen Subanen handloom weaving and natural dyeing traditions, particularly in the creation of traditional textiles such as the pulaw and khandit. At the same time, it promotes community-based textile innovation and reinforces efforts to conserve the province’s rich cultural heritage.
By equipping participants with foundational weaving skills and introducing innovations in hybrid handloom techniques and natural dyes, the program highlights the ongoing efforts to revitalize the textile industry in regional communities while empowering Indigenous artisans.
In line with the celebration of Araw ng Sibugay and the province’s 25th Founding Anniversary on February 24, 2026, outputs from the weavers will be showcased, highlighting both their craftsmanship and the enduring legacy of Subanen textile artistry.
