DOST-PTRI Director amplifies the growing potential of Sibugay Weaves and Zambonga's resources in the textile production industry
"We learn from traditional knowledge systems, from culture, and from heritage. From these roots, we rise and develop a renewed and refined vision of Subanen weaving, perhaps even a distinct identity for Zamboanga Sibugay weaving that reflects and conveys our culture, our shared aspirations, and our collective destiny. We redefine the use of textiles, but as long as we continue to use, patronize, and promote Philippine textiles, it will never be lost."
At the project launch and turnover ceremony of Suba-Weave Handlooms, DOST-PTRI Director Julius Leano highlighted the growing potential of Subanen weaving and Zamboanga’s local resources in strengthening the textile production industry.

He emphasized the production of silk plasma, a material essential in silkworm development and the creation of silk products, which can be sourced in Mindanao, particularly in the town of Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. He noted that with resources for silk production already available in the region, these can be aligned with the goals of SEDA Pilipinas, an initiative aimed at enhancing the Philippine silk industry by promoting silk as a sustainable resource and advancing local production.
Director Leano also reiterated the importance of Republic Act No. 9242, which mandates government officials and employees to wear uniforms made from Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF). With nearly two million government employees nationwide required to wear PTF uniforms, the policy creates a substantial demand for locally sourced textile materials and products.
This mandate enables local weavers to showcase their cultural traditions while generating employment across communities. In Zamboanga Sibugay, the revitalization of Subanen weaving opens new economic opportunities, with science, technology, and innovation helping preserve heritage while creating sustainable livelihoods.
