KAWAYARN collection highlights bamboo textile innovation at Bambootech 2026

The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) spotlights bamboo textile innovation at Bambootech 2026, also known as the Bamboo Technology and Innovation Summit 2026, at the Golden Prince Hotel and Suites in Cebu City from March 4 to 5, 2026.

DOST-PTRI presents its KatHABI Textile Innovation Exhibit featuring the KAWAYARN Collection, which demonstrates how bamboo-based textile innovations foster sustainable industries and inclusive growth. The Bamboo Textiles PH program promotes bamboo as a sustainable alternative fiber in the Philippine textile industry. The program generates economic opportunities through bamboo cultivation and processing, while advancing sustainable development through the establishment of Bamboo Textile Fiber Innovation Hubs (BTFIH) across the country.

Cebu has long been known for its thriving bamboo industry. Locals traditionally use bamboo as a primary material for shelters, handicrafts, and furniture. Today, through science-driven innovation and strategic initiatives led by DOST-PTRI, bamboo expands beyond its conventional uses and enters the textile sector as a high-value raw material for fabric production.

The exhibit highlights bamboo textile innovation and aims to inspire stakeholders in Region VII (Central Visayas). By showcasing bamboo textiles PH, and other innovations developed by various DOST agencies and partner organizations, the event underscores that these technologies are adaptable within the region. This is particularly significant for Cebu, where bamboo plays a crucial role in environmental protection. Bamboo serves as a natural defense against soil erosion, particularly in the consecutive typhoons that have devastatingly affected the province recently.

Through the interactive exhibit, participants witness firsthand how bamboo is transformed into sustainable fabrics. The display walks visitors through the production process. This transparent presentation of the value chain demonstrates the science, technology, and innovation behind the bamboo textile product.

As Bambootech 2026 convenes industry leaders, innovators, researchers, and policymakers, DOST-PTRI’s participation reinforces the agency’s commitment to strengthen the Philippine textile sector through research-driven solutions. The event positions bamboo not only as a resilient environmental resource but also as a transformative material for a future-ready, inclusive, and sustainable textile industry.
