The Bamboo Textiles PH are featured at Montekristo Estate in Malta during the Fashion show entitled “Creative Sustainability through Fashion, A Fusion of Art,” featuring Mayeth S. Codoy, a Filipina designer, and owner of MYET, a Norwegian brand based in Norway that specializes in designing NTF fabrics.

Ms. Codoy's work is anchored in sustainability, influenced by Norwegian culture and economic value. She showcases this through her ingenious use of Philippine natural textile fibers in haute couture fashion. Her signature fashion style includes minimalist contemporary design using natural textile fibers.

The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) recently visited Norway in January and brought Bamboo fabrics in varying green, orange, and natural bamboo fiber colors. The Institute also brought Bamboo Sinukitan Inabel Fabric woven by Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) awardee Magdalena Gamayo of Pinili, Ilocos Norte. These fabrics were given to Ms. Codoy to promote Philippine textiles.

Ms. Codoy earned her degree in Design and Modelling at Esmod Oslo. She has been featured in several magazines and has conducted fashion shows in New York, Milan, Norway, Paris, and recently Malta. Additionally, she is involved in the Norwegian film industry, designing and building costumes for them. She envisions a future where the use of polyester or synthetic materials will be reduced and shifted to natural textile fibers. Her design primarily focuses on the use of natural textile materials such as pineapple, silk, and abaca.

She mainly sources her materials in the Philippines and transforms them into fashionable apparel in Norway. As her business and brand name grew, she now has a small team of tailors and seamstresses located in the Philippines. Part of her fashion advocacy is to also have a sustainable business model, promoting comparative equity for local tailors and seamstresses. At a very young age (8 years old), she helped her mother in her work as a seamstress in their local village in Cebu. She knew how tough business could be for local skilled workers in the Philippine settings; henceforth, she offered just compensation (above the minimum wage) for her team as an homage to their skills. Ms. Codoy's fashion advocacy, dedication, and passion for Philippine textiles have led the DOST-PTRI to collaborate with her through the help of the Embassy of the Philippines in Norway.

Watch out for more Philippine textiles on the international runway!
