On September 28, 2024, Discovery Samal, in partnership with the Davao Fashion and Design Council Foundation, Inc. (DFDCFI), hosted the inaugural Stellar Fashion Gala at the Samal Grand Ballroom in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte. The event featured a 100-piece resort apparel collection, incorporating Philippine Tropical Fabrics and KAWAYARN developed by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI).
The fabrics used in the collection were made from a blend of piña, cotton, abaca, and bamboo fibers, developed as part of DOST-PTRI’s efforts to promote sustainable textile innovations. The designs showcased at the gala highlighted the use of these materials in resort wear.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the weaving communities involved in the b.LOOM Project through the Mindanao Trade Expo Foundation, Inc. The b.LOOM Project is an initiative of DFDCFI, focused on preserving traditional weaving techniques in the Davao Region while introducing modern design and technology. The funds raised will be directed toward supporting these communities, particularly the men, women, and children engaged in weaving.
DFDCFI, known for its participation in national and international events such as Miss Universe and Manila FAME, plays a key role in the development of the local fashion industry in Davao.
