The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) participated in the 2024 SOX Technology Expo held on June 24, 2024, at the South Cotabato Gymnasium and Cultural Center in Koronadal City, South Cotabato. The event was organized by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT Region XII) in partnership with DOST XII - Department of Science and Technology - Region XII.
DOST-PTRI's participation featured a textile innovation exhibition, highlighting the transformation of raw fibers into yarns from various natural fibers from abaca, banana, and pineapple, which are abundant resources in Region 12. A notable highlight was the T'nalak fabric, a traditional handwoven fabric made from abaca by the T'boli women.
Central to the exhibition was the Institute's DigiTELAzation Program, which showcased covert security yarns designed to authenticate and counteract the proliferation of counterfeit handloom woven goods in the market. This initiative aims to protect the integrity of authentic handloom products and support the weavers' community.
In line with this, DOST-PTRI Representative Engr. Ephraim H. de Gracia served as a speaker during the Techno Expo. He discussed the DigiTELAzation of the Philippine Handloom Weaving Industry, aiming to equip weavers with technological solutions to address their challenges. His presentation detailed the implementation of program objectives such as registering weavers in an online database for traceability, digitizing original weave patterns, and employing covert technology like spectroscopy and textile material engines.
DOST-PTRI's involvement in the 2024 SOX Technology Expo underscores its commitment to advancing the Philippine textile industry through innovation and technology, ensuring the preservation and promotion of traditional weaving practices while addressing modern challenges.
