As part of the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW), the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) hosted a Natural Dye Silk Screen Workshop on November 11, 2024, at Abreeza Mall in Davao City. The event aimed to promote sustainable textile practices through the use of natural dyes, while introducing participants to the basics of screen-printing technology.

The workshop commenced with a detailed overview of the DOST-PTRI’s Natural Dyes Program, which has been at the forefront of promoting eco-friendly dyeing techniques in the Philippines. In addition to educating the public about the environmental benefits of using plant-based dyes, the program has championed the revival of traditional dyeing methods, fostering a deeper appreciation for the country’s rich textile heritage.

Moreover, a lecture on the principles of silk screen printing was delivered. Participants, primarily students from local universities, were introduced to the screen-printing process and its potential in creating intricate designs on fabrics.

After the lecture, the hands-on activity began, where participants had the opportunity to try natural dye paints made developed by the Institute from locally sourced materials. The dyes extracted from Talisay leaves, Annatto seeds, and Mahogany barks are part of the Institute’s ongoing efforts to harness indigenous resources for sustainable textile production.

"My experience in this Natural Dye Silk Screen Workshop allowed me to explore and try new techniques, especially in printing on this t-shirt. I appreciated the opportunity to work with plant-based dyes, which taught me how to use natural resources in the printing process," said Althea Mae A. Sampan, a participant from Carlos P. Garcia Senior High School.

The participants expressed enthusiasm about the experience, particularly as it provided a unique opportunity to work with locally sourced natural dyes that they could replicate in their own communities. The combination of traditional techniques with modern technology made for a comprehensive learning experience, one that highlighted the potential for sustainable fashion in the Philippine textile industry.

By combining education with hands-on application, the DOST-PTRI’s workshop underscored the importance of preserving indigenous dyeing traditions while embracing innovative practices. As part of the ongoing RSTW celebrations, this event showcased how science and technology can bridge the gap between culture, sustainability, and industry.
