The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) marked the inaugural day of the 1st National Textile Convention (TELACon) with the launch of two groundbreaking partnerships, reinforcing their commitment to advancing Philippine textile education and innovation at the Jose Rizal Hall, Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City on January 30, 2024.
The first partnership marked the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between DOST-PTRI and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Inc. (DLS-CSB), solidifying their commitment to textile education and research. This partnership forms part of the establishment of the Textile Academy, a hub for textile knowledge exchange. The academy aims to develop textile S&T human resources through skills training programs, workshops, research initiatives, and professional development, fostering expertise in textile technology, design, and sustainable practices.
Also, this collaboration integrates seamlessly with DLS-CSB's School of Environment and Design, reinforcing the institution's dedication to textile education and design development. Together, DOST-PTRI and DLS-CSB envision cultivating a pool of textile scientists, engineers, and technicians, contributing to the growth of the Philippine textile sector.
Following this, the DOST-PTRI inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Research and Development Center (RDC), Army Support Command (ASCom), Philippine Army, unveiling the Philippine Camouflage, Optical, Mechanical, Ballistic, and Armored Textiles (COMBATex) program. This initiative focuses on advancing natural and indigenous cellulosic-based textile fibers for military applications.
The COMBATex Program aligns with the Department of National Defense's call for a Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP), envisions the localization of technical textile production, utilizing Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) and natural textile fibers (NTF). The program aims to contribute to a self-reliant supply chain for military textile needs, revitalizing the local textile industry.
These two strategic partnerships underscore DOST-PTRI's dedication to elevating the Philippine textile sector, fostering education, and supporting innovative solutions for both civilian and military applications.
