In a bid to spotlight the transformative potential of Philippine textiles, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) showcased its array of programs, technologies, and services at the recent Likha 3: Likha Ko, Lahi Ko event, organized by the Office of the First Lady held at Forum 2 & 3 of the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on June 10, 2024.
DOST-PTRI, represented by Ms. Evangeline Flor P. Manalang, Head of Technology Transfer, Information, and Promotion Staff, led the discussion by offering an overview of the various agency initiatives. Among the topics covered was an introduction to the institute's fiber treatment technology, which processes plant fibers into yarns and fabrics, encompassing nonwoven textiles such as shoe insoles.
During the talk, she delved into various programs aimed at bolstering textile innovation and entrepreneurship across the regions. The "Fostering the Revitalization of Nascent Textile Innovation Ecosystems in the Region (FRONTIER)" program seeks to establish hubs for natural textile fibers and yarns, alongside centers dedicated to natural dyes and weaving innovations, amplifying regional textile capabilities.
Another notable initiative highlighted was the "Creativity and Equity through Accelerated Textile Technology Engagement and Entrepreneurship Ventures for Vulnerable Sectors (CREATTEEVs)" program. This initiative underscores DOST-PTRI's commitment to inclusivity and diversity within the textile industry, aiming to provide equal livelihood opportunities and inspire innovation among individuals and organizations.
Moreover, the Institute emphasized the importance of textile testing for quality assurance. Ensuring that Philippine textile products meet industry standards is crucial for competitiveness in global markets, prompting DOST-PTRI to promote testing and certification.
Furthermore, DOST-PTRI showcased the Textile Academy, a consolidation of various training, research endeavors, and educational materials to facilitate knowledge transfer and skills enhancement among stakeholders from government, industry, and academia.
In a call to action, Ms. Manalang urged handloom weavers, artisans and entrepreneurs to avail of its programs and services such as the recently launched National Certificate II Upright Handloom Weaving Assessment Support Program. Additionally, textile enthusiasts and industry professionals were encouraged to pre-register for the 2024 textile skills training courses under the Textile Academy.
