With a mission to revitalize the Philippine textile industry by utilizing locally sourced natural fibers, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) made waves at the Technology Investment Forum during the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) Eastern Visayas held at the People's Center and Library in Tacloban City.
DOST-PTRI representative, Engr. Karl Marx Lennin A. Florante, Science Research Specialist II and the Project Leader for the Natural Textile Fiber Innovation Hub (NTFIH), took the stage to present the Institute's Blended Spun Yarns Technology. In an in-depth discussion, he explained how this innovative technology blends various natural fibers to create yarns that boast enhanced properties, such as increased durability, improved texture, and environmental sustainability.
Additionally, the establishment of NTFIHs in the country will also facilitate the development and production of Blended Spun Yarns. This initiative seeks to foster innovation in utilizing natural textile raw materials for yarn production, thereby enhancing the sustainability and competitiveness of the textile industry.
Furthermore, Engr. Florante's presentation highlighted the collaborative efforts of DOST-PTRI and local communities in developing these technologies. He underscored the role of government support in fostering innovation and driving economic growth in the region.
