The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) recently met with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) at the Pasay City Jail Male Dormitory to establish a partnership for a textile-based livelihood project for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs). The initiative will focus on Tapestry Weaving and Woven Fabric Production.
Jail Superintendent Alberto R. Tapiru, Jr., MPA, shared that PDLs are currently producing rags from recycled fabric. To enhance their skills and output, DOST-PTRI will provide the necessary equipment and training for tapestry weaving and fabric production. This will enable PDLs to create higher-value products that can be sold, generating income to support their families.
Moreover, BJMP believes that by investing in these programs, we can empower PDLs to break the cycle of crime and contribute positively to their communities. We are confident that these initiatives will not only benefit the individuals involved but also contribute to a safer and more just society.
This project is part of the Institute’s CREATTEEVs program, which champions inclusivity, diversity, and equal livelihood opportunities for all. By fostering innovation and representation, the program aims to empower individuals and organizations in the textile industry.
