With a mission to enhance the visibility and appreciation of Philippine textiles in the United States, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) and The Hinabi Project have formally joined forces. The collaboration was sealed through a Memorandum of Agreement signed by DOST-PTRI Director Julius L. Leaño, Jr. and The Hinabi Project President Dr. Almira Gilles during the KatHABI Fashion Innovation Show at the Philippine Center in New York on June 27, 2024.
The partnership aims to bolster the promotion of Philippine textiles within the Filipino-American community, leveraging both organizations' expertise in research and development. A key focus of the agreement is the digitalization of Philippine textiles, which will enable wider accessibility and appreciation of traditional Filipino craftsmanship in the digital age.
Moreover, the collaboration underscores a commitment to supporting handloom weaving communities across the Philippines. It seeks to integrate these communities into the fabric of Filipino-American cultural identity through strategic communication and educational initiatives. By bridging these cultural connections, the partnership seeks to enhance awareness and appreciation for Philippine textiles among the diaspora.
