MISS UNIVERSE 2022 R’BONNEY GABRIEL WEAVES WITH DOST-PTRI’S THERALOOM AT PINAS SADYA

Miss Universe 2022, R’Bonney Nola Gabriel, showcased her weaving skills using the Portable Therapeutic Handloom (TheraLoom) Weaving Machine Version 1 during her visit to a weaving demonstration at Pinas Sadya's store in Power Plant Mall, Makati City, on July 15, 2024. The event was organized by Pinas Sadya and featured a collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) and SAORI Hands of Love.
Pinas Sadya, as a store dedicated to showcasing and supporting local artisans across the Philippines, aligns perfectly with DOST-PTRI's mission to advance textile technology while preserving cultural heritage. The collaboration highlighted the store's commitment to integrating traditional weaving techniques with modern innovations.
Moreover, TheraLoom, developed by DOST-PTRI, is specifically designed to cater to differently-abled individuals, paraplegics, and the elderly. Based on users' experience, it aids in the development of motor skills, improves dexterity, provides an avenue for creative expression, and serves as a potential livelihood. This hand-operated, portable loom is also adaptable to wheelchairs, making it accessible to a wider range of users.
During R’Bonney's visit to Pinas Sadya’s store, she also tried the handloom weaving machine of SAORI Hands of Love. The DOST-PTRI Team also had the opportunity to showcase its developed blended fabrics made from natural fibers. The fabrics, which incorporate materials such as pineapple, abaca, silk, and bamboo, are testaments to the institute's commitment to sustainable and innovative textile production.
Furthermore, R’Bonney's involvement in the weaving demonstration not only brought awareness to the TheraLoom’s capabilities but also emphasized the importance of inclusivity in creative industries. DOST-PTRI's TheraLoom is a representation of the Institute’s commitment to innovation and social responsibility, providing solutions that cater to the needs of all individuals, regardless of their physical abilities.
