The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) presented its textile innovations in creations by renowned designers at the KatHABI Fashion Show, held at the Manila Jockey Club in Carmona, Cavite, on October 14, 2024. The event was part of the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTIW) in CALABARZON.
It highlighted advancements in textiles and garments, especially those crafted from Philippine Tropical Fabrics. Featured collections included works from prominent designers such as Mr. Avel Bacudio, Mr. Albert Andrada of Albert Andrada Luxewear, Ms. Niña Corpuz of Nina Inabel, Dr. Lizan Calina of Hiraya Lizan, and Mr. JC Buendia.
The BAYO x SEDA Pilipinas Collection was also showcased, featuring DOST-PTRI-developed spun silk blended with pineapple leaf and lyocell fibers, as well as 100% 21d raw silk yarns. This collection incorporated sericulture-inspired sculptural ensembles, sublimation dyes, and embroidery patchworks, drawing inspiration from the fruitful and flowering mulberry leaves. Fabric manipulation and treatments mimicked cocoon and silkworm silhouettes.
Additionally, the 2023 Stitch-Off National Streetwear Competition took the stage, with entries from schools such as Benguet State University, the School of Fashion and Arts Design Institute, Iloilo Science and Technology University, Pangasinan State University, and the Technological University of the Philippines - Manila.
A highlight of the event was the showcase of bamboo textile products, featuring Likhang Maragondon fabrics from Maragondon, Cavite, and creations by Jham Bautista Couture. This collection used DOST-PTRI-developed bamboo textile fiber extraction, treatment, and spinning technologies, combined with handloom weaving techniques, natural dyeing, and fabric finishing methods.
In addition to fashion, the event also spotlighted handcrafted footwear by Aishe, a Filipino brand based in Liliw, Laguna. Their shoes, made from locally-sourced materials such as handloom weaves and natural fiber twine, proudly reflected Filipino craftsmanship.
