With a vision to empower the next generation of Science innovators, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) is making its mark at the National Youth Science, Technology, and Innovation Festival (NYSTIF), happening from September 18-21, 2024, at the PICC Forum Tent, Pasay City.

The Institute's exhibit serves as a platform for young minds to explore the future of textiles, focusing on sustainability, innovation, and the role of science in shaping the industry. It also aims to ignite the curiosity of the youth, encouraging them to envision how they can contribute to the textile industry's evolution in the face of global challenges like climate change and resource conservation.

Central to the exhibition is the Institute's DigiTELAzation Program, which showcases covert security yarns designed to authenticate and counteract the proliferation of counterfeit handloom-woven goods in the market. This initiative aims to protect the integrity of authentic handloom products and support the weavers' community.

The exhibition also features an array of naturally dyed yarns and dye sources under the Natural Dyes Program, highlighting the use of indigenous plants and materials such as indigo, turmeric, and mahogany. These natural dyes not only promote sustainable practices but also celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines.

Footwear products from the Shoes and Footwear Accessories from the R&D on Textile-based Omnibus Solutions for the Philippine Shoe Industry (SAFATOS) Program are also on display, such as the Lakat shoes enhanced with water-repellent finishing technology and antimicrobial properties, as well as shoes crafted from Philippine Tropical Fabrics, modeled by the Filipino pop group ALAMAT.

Furthermore, the exhibition gives visitors the chance to analyze Natural Textile Fiber (NTF) yarns using a microscope, understand textile testing procedures, and try handloom weaving using DOST-PTRI's Therapeutic Handloom Machine V2, developed with a sliding beater specifically designed for differently-abled persons.
