INAUGURATION OF THE REGIONAL YARN PRODUCTION AND INNOVATION CENTER IN ILOILO
As a realization of its TELA Pilipinas advocacy or known as Textiles Empowering Lives Anew advocacy, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) spearheads the inauguration of the Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center in Miagao, Iloilo (RYPIC).
The RYPIC is a project under the DOST Inclusive Innovation TELA or i2TELA Program. It is the first microscale yarn spinning facility which aims to produce crafted yarns from blends of natural textile fibers, abaca, banana and pineapple leaf, in combination with cotton at a 50 kilograms of yarns per day capacity.The RYPIC aims to jumpstart local ecosystems for the textile sector and will cater to the requirements of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs)in the fashion industry, academe and government institutions for yarns and fabrics using local raw materials, skills, and talents.
The RYPIC is a fruit of collaboration among the Philippine Textile Research Institute, Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U), Department of Science and Technology Region VI, Local Government Unit of Miagao, and Great Women Philippines Inc.
The inauguration will be held on November 6, 2019 at the Iloilo Science and Technology University Miagao Campus. This will be attended by the partners-collaborators and textile stakeholders from the government, academe, private institutions, and enterprises, which will all have a chance to be among the first to tour around the facility.
DOST-PTRI Director Celia Elumba will give an overview of the project and how it forms part of the i2TELA Program. The partner-collaborators, namely, ISAT-U President Raul Muyong, DOST Secretary Fortunato dela Pena will keynote the inauguration. The Hon. Mayor MacarioNapulan, DOST VI Regional Director Engr. Rowen Gelonga, Great Women Philippines Incorporated President Jeannie Javelosa will share messages about the collaboration. CHED Chairperson Prospero E. de Vera, Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Asec. Anthony Gerard Y. Gonzales, Hon. Senator Nancy Binay, and Deputy Speaker Hon. Loren Legarda will also share their messages of support.
Iloilo-based renowned lifestyle designer PJ Arañador has ramped up the excitement for the event and will curate a Hablon Fashion Presentationand Exhibit. In good support, Provincial Tourism Officer Bombette Marin will direct the presentation which will feature the vibrant handloom woven fabrics of Iloilo.
