The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) recently inaugurated the Natural Textile Fiber Innovation Hub (NTFIH) at Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) on August 2, 2024. This marks the establishment of the first innovation hub of its kind in the SOCCSKSARGEN region, aimed at advancing the textile industry in Central Mindanao in collaboration with DOST XII - Department of Science and Technology - Region XII and SKSU.
The NTFIH Sultan Kudarat will focus on optimizing the use of abundant Natural Textile Fibers (NTFs) in Mindanao, such as banana, abaca, and pineapple leaf fibers. Central to its mission is the advancement of socioeconomic progress and the empowerment of local communities, particularly farmers and indigenous groups who rely on these natural resources for their livelihoods.
This hub will positively impact 11,797 farmers, 15 fabricator personnel, and 700 weavers, benefiting 12,518 individuals. Additionally, the innovation hub will require twenty-nine (29) hectares of NTF source each year for textile fiber processing, guaranteeing a consistent supply of high-quality natural fibers for spinning.
Additionally, The NTFIH will support the Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center (RYPIC) Sultan Kudarat's efforts to improve yarn production and drive innovation within the textile sector by providing a steady supply of high-quality natural fibers.
Stay tuned for the upcoming launch of the RYPIC Mindanao! Exciting details are coming soon!
