The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) is making waves at the 2024 National Arts and Crafts Fair (NACF) with its KatHABI Textile Innovation Exposition. Held from October 23 to 27 at Megatrade Halls 1-3 in SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City, the exhibit showcases the Institute's latest advancements in textile technology and sustainability.
One of the highlights of the exposition is the fiber transformation display which features samples of raw bamboo fiber, treated fiber, and silk yarns. The exhibit also includes DOST-PTRI's Natural Dyes Program, displaying naturally-dyed yarns, dye sources, and natural dye paints, emphasizing the Institute's dedication to eco-friendly textile production.
A forward-thinking addition to the exhibit is the TEXREV Project, which aims to address the growing concern over textile waste. This initiative repurposes post-industrial textile waste into spun yarns, with shredded old clothes and recycled yarns prominently displayed. The project highlights the potential for circular fashion, reducing waste, and promoting sustainability in the textile industry.
Innovative footwear is also making its mark at the exposition. Lakat shoes, made from 100% woven pineapple fibers, with water-repellent and antimicrobial properties—demonstrating the practical application of sustainable materials in everyday products.
The exhibition also celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines through its handwoven fabric displays. Visitors can witness the intricate design of naturally-dyed Patadyong fabrics from Antique, the T'nalak textiles from South Cotabato, the Yakan weaves from Zamboanga, the Pis Siyabit from Sulu, and digitally printed silk fabric.
In addition to fabrics, the exhibit features an array of wearable items like the cotton-pineapple fiber male and female set adorned with digitally printed designs and a stunning kimono dress by GAMABA Awardee Magdalena Gamayo. The dress, crafted from handwoven cotton-abaca Pinili weave, features inlaid suksuk and sleeves accentuated with Panubok embroidery by SLT artist Ms. Regina Villanueva. All pieces were designed by renowned designer Anthony Cruz Legarda.
NACF is a flagship event organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) that celebrates the creativity and craftsmanship of Filipino artisans across the country. Held annually, the fair serves as a platform for showcasing traditional and contemporary arts and crafts, bringing together local designers, entrepreneurs, and cultural communities.
