In a bid to boost the Philippines' textile industry through sustainable regional development, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) recently held a capacity-building training on natural dye extraction and application from October 14 to 18, 2024, at Central Philippines State University (CPSU) in Kabankalan, Negros Occidental. The training equipped local weavers with sustainable dyeing techniques using locally sourced plants.

The training, part of the Institute's FRONTIER: Fostering the Revitalization of Nascent Textile Innovation Ecosystems in the Regions program aimed at strengthening regional textile industries, introduced weavers to natural dyes made from mahogany bark, talisay leaves, mango leaves, turmeric, and coconut husk. Participants learned step-by-step methods for dye extraction and textile application, developing skills that enable them to create eco-friendly, vibrant dyes suitable for traditional handloom weaving.

By the workshop’s end, participants had produced six distinct shades, showcasing the versatility of natural dyes. Weavers expressed enthusiasm about the potential of these eco-friendly dyes to enhance their products and reduce reliance on synthetic materials, seeing it as a chance to add value to their handcrafted items and meet demand from environmentally conscious markets.

DOST-PTRI’s FRONTIER program is part of a broader effort to build sustainable textile hubs throughout the Philippines, encouraging regional economies to harness locally available resources. With this training complete, DOST-PTRI officials believe natural dyes could become a cornerstone of Philippine textile production, supporting local weavers and contributing to a sustainable industry.
