The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) showcases a live demonstration of natural dyeing using indigo plants as part of the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) in Eastern Visayas. The event, currently being held at the People's Center and Library from June 25-27, highlights sustainable and eco-friendly practices in textile production, with a special focus on traditional dyeing techniques.

Visitors at the DOST-PTRI booth were given the unique opportunity to learn about the process of extracting and using natural dyes from the Philippine Indigo plant, locally known as "Malatayum.”

The demonstration, led by experts from the Institute, featured the traditional Japanese technique of shibori, a resist-dyeing method that creates intricate patterns on fabric. Participants were able to try their hand at shibori, twisting, folding, and binding fabric before dipping it into the indigo dye.

The live demonstration of natural dyeing is open to the public until tomorrow, June 27, 2024. Don't miss the opportunity to experience this unique and educational event!
