The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) participated in the "KAWAYANIHAN: A Circular Economy Movement" press conference today, held at the Ayala Malls Centrio Activity Center, Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental. The event, organized by DOST Region 10, focused on the potential of bamboo to promote a circular economy, enhance climate resilience, and foster sustainability in the region.
During the conference, DOST-PTRI showcased its bamboo textile technology, highlighting the institute's efforts to develop innovative applications for bamboo specifically tailored for Mindanao. The DOST-PTRI is recognized for its leadership among DOST agencies in the research and development of bamboo-based solutions, aiming to harness the plant's versatility to benefit local communities.
A significant announcement at the press conference was Mindanao's upcoming attempt to set a Guinness World Record (GWR) for the "Most People Planting Bamboo Simultaneously." Scheduled for tomorrow, October 18, 2024, this event will take place across 19 locations in Mindanao. Over 50 collaborating institutions are expected to mobilize approximately 4,500 participants to plant at least 20,000 bamboo shoots, showcasing a collective commitment to environmental sustainability and community involvement.
The press conference also highlighted DOST’s plans to collaborate with stakeholders in developing unified strategies for the bamboo industry, aligned with the Philippine Bamboo Industry Roadmap. These strategies will focus on data-driven approaches for enhancing pre-processing, adding value, developing infrastructure, and providing logistical and marketing support for the bamboo sector.
As the world faces increasing climate challenges, initiatives like KAWAYANIHAN emphasize the importance of sustainable practices and local resource utilization. The DOST-PTRI's commitment to bamboo technology underscores the potential for this versatile plant to address environmental issues while creating economic opportunities for communities across Mindanao.
