In a bid to revolutionize and sustain the textile industry across all regions of the Philippines, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) capped off its participation in the 15 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) events for 2024 by joining the RSTW Central Luzon held at Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. Running from December 10 to 12, 2024, the event highlighted DOST-PTRI’s ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability as an exhibitor.

One of the main highlights of DOST-PTRI’s exhibit was the Urban Vibe Collection, crafted by CLSU student designers and presented as their official entry in DOST-PTRI’s 2024 Stitch-Off Competition. This collection harmoniously integrated urban aesthetics, athletic inspirations, and Filipino cultural heritage, utilizing Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF), repurposed garments, and authentic carabao leather.

The Natural Dyes Program was another feature, emphasizing environmentally sustainable dyeing practices. Yarns and fabrics colored using natural dyes derived from plant sources—such as annatto seeds, mahogany bark, talisay leaves, and coffee pulp—were displayed. This program aligns with the growing global demand for greener alternatives in the textile and fashion industries.

Also featured were products from the Shoes and Footwear Accessories from the R&D on Textile-based Omnibus Solutions (SAFATOS) Program, including Lakat shoes. These innovative shoes are crafted entirely from pineapple fibers and enhanced with water-repellent and antimicrobial technologies, exemplifying a sustainable approach to fashion-forward footwear.

Adding a touch to the exhibition was the KAWAYARN: The Bamboo Textiles PH Program, which showcased the versatility of bamboo as a textile material. Visitors explored bamboo-based products, including fabrics, bags, accessories, and wearables. This initiative underscored DOST-PTRI's innovative approach to developing high-quality, eco-friendly textiles.

The DOST-PTRI’s participation in RSTW Central Luzon 2024 not only showcased innovative textile technologies but also demonstrated the potential of integrating Filipino cultural heritage into modern applications. This initiative reinforces the Institute's role as a driving force in the transformation and modernization of the Philippine textile industry.
