DOST-PTRI, DOST IV-A and Angono Ateliers Association Collaborate on Sustainable Art Using Natural Dyes
The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), together with DOST Region IV-A and the Angono Ateliers Association Philippines, led an initiative to use natural dyes in art. This collaboration aimed to merge traditional artistry with eco-friendly practices that are both creative and environmentally conscious.

The day kicked-off with an orientation from the DOST-PTRI NatDyes Team, who introduced the science behind natural dye extraction and the environmental benefits of using plant-based dyes. The team highlighted the advantages of sustainable dyes rather than synthetic alternatives, showcasing how these materials can help preserve both cultural and environmental heritage.
The highlight of the event is the Painting Workshop, where the Angono artists had the opportunity to experiment with natural dyes. Under the guidance of the NatDyes team, they explored color mixing and application techniques, discovering the unique properties of natural pigments in their works. The workshop was a fusion of art and science, demonstrating the creative potential of sustainable practices.
The artists also toured the DOST-PTRI facility, where they learned about textile innovation and the traditional art of handloom weaving. The association expressed their eagerness to incorporate natural dyes into their future works, marking a successful collaboration that blends creativity with sustainability in the Philippine art scene.
