Kalamata embodies the Philippines Textile Research Institute's (PTRI) vision and strategy to uplift the textile-based industries particularly the handloom weaving sector which falls under the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

This is a practical source book containing a collection of 100 weave designs developed by PTRI to serve as reference for weavers, yarn manufacturers, fabric designers, garment technologists, researchers and students.

Challenged by the need to enhance the capability of local weavers to produce more competitive designs, it showcases the unlimited potentials of handloom weaving. The Design specification does not impose any boundary as to color, material or end-use. The use of varied colors or materials in the warp and filling for a desired end-use will surely improve most of the weaving patterns. In the process, weavers could rediscover themselves as artisans and partake in the admiration of these innovative fabrics.

The book contains various information on fibers, fabrics and production specifications.  It promises to be an essential resource for MSMEs involved in handloom weaving and handicraft manufacturing, to get market access and stay ahead in the global arena, where success depends on new ideas and innovations, among others.

Kalamata, therefore, documents the optimism and commitment of the PTRI in the pursuance of its mandate. It is hoped that this may serve as the Institute's contribution to preserve and enrich the Philippine culture through enhancement of the diversity, uniqueness and productivity of the Philippine handloom weaving, while empowering the MSMEs and the rural populace.

*"Kalamata" is a Maranao word meaning "to weave".
