DOST-PTRI Researchers Develop Greener Bamboo Textiles

Bamboo textiles have become increasingly popular as part of a sustainable and eco-friendly solution to textile materials and manufacturing. It is along this line that the DOST, through its Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), develops sustainable technologies to create greener Bamboo textile materials.
The DOST-PTRI Bamboo fiber extraction technology, already applied for intellectual property protection with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPhil), was first developed in 2015. It includes the mechanical, chemical, and biological processes to liberate the fibers from the bamboo culm. The extracted bamboo textile fiber is treated to obtain highly cellulosic textile fibers while preserving the inherent properties of bamboo such as antimicrobial and UV-blocking properties. The technology, applied to natural extraction of different Bamboo species in the Philippines such as Kawayan Tinik (Bambusa blumeana), Bolo (Gigantochloa levis), Yellow Bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris), and Giant Bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper), produces strong and fine Bamboo fibers. Considerably mild and eco-friendly technology coupled with the simplicity of the extraction and treatment technique makes it highly suitable for textile fiber processing in remote Bamboo-rich local areas leading to economic gains for the Bamboo textile industry.

The Philippine Textile Research Institute, the textile research arm of the Department of Science and Technology, through its researchers, will feature various studies in the 41st Annual PAASE Meeting and Symposium and the 2021 Annual Scientific Meeting (APAMS). The presentation is under the REC 6 Parallel Session: Philippine Material Innovations on October 10, 2021, Sunday, from 9:30 AM onwards. Seven (7) representatives from the Research and Development Division (RDD) of the Institute will join the roster of presenters.

September of every year is proclaimed as Philippine Bamboo Month. This resolution was adopted through House Resolution 197 which aims to promote the many uses and relevance of bamboo as a material for various applications. In keeping with the celebration of Philippine Bamboo Month, the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) features the BambooTextilesPH.

Philippine Silk Production Gets Stronger in the North
Silk yarn production in Kalinga will soon add to the exciting story of the DOST - Philippine Textile Research Institute’s SEDA Pilipinas brand.
Part of the DOST-PTRI’s Philippine Silk Road Program Through S&T Program is the development of the Philippine Silk Course. This includes the conduct of training about the “Basics of Sericulture: Silkworm Rearing to Post Cocoon Harvest Management”, which was recently conducted in Kalinga State University Rizal Campus last July 26-29, 2021. It was collaboratively staged by the DOST-CAR, Kalinga State University, and the DOST-PTRI.

DOST-PTRI DEVELOPED 4 NEW SILKWORM HYBRIDS AND PARTNERS WITH SILK HUBS IN MINDANAO.
Silkworm rearing became fortuitous activity during the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) in Cagayan de Oro. Aside from keeping the people productive while earning without the need to go out, it also provided means for a scientific activity to proceed and validate relevant silk-related information.
