DOST-PTRI CONDUCTS TECHNO FORUM; MINDORO WEAVERS OVERCOME DISTANCE FOR HANDLOOM WEAVING WORKSHOP

Weavers from Roxas and Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro, attended the Techno Forum of the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), titled "Unraveling Textiles: Textile 101 and Basic Handloom Weaving," in connection with the celebration of the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) MIMAROPA at the Calapan City Convention Center, Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, on May 7, 2024. 

This event showcases the intersection of science and art in traditional handloom weaving, focusing on technological advancements, strategies, and solutions that enhance the diverse landscape of Philippine handloom weaving. The first part of the session is the "Textile 101: Convergence of Science and Art in Handloom Weaving," where the participants are introduced to the science behind fibers, yarns, and fabrics.

An immersive workshop on Basic Handloom Weaving was also conducted where participants learned about various weaving concepts, including types of weaves, power looms and handloom weaving machines, parts of handloom weaving machines and their accessories, as well as technical aspects of warping, shedding, picking, beating, and pattern creation.  

Aside from weavers from Roxas and Mansalay, the event was also attended by Junior and Senior High School students, college students, teachers, farmers, and others interested in weaving.
