The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), hosted a workshop on natural dye extraction and textile applications for nineteen (19) staff members from the United Nations-World Health Organization (UN-WHO) held at the United Nations Avenue, Manila, on August 16, 2024.
The said workshop is part of the WHO’s Healing Hearts initiative led by Dr. Susan Mercado, Director of Programme Management, and represented by Dr. Julienne O’Rourke, Technical Officer for Workplace Culture, which centered on promoting workforce well-being and engagement through interpersonal relationships towards attaining health for all.
During the workshop, various aspects of DOST-PTRI’s natural dyes technology were discussed, including natural colorant extraction from local dye sources, textile dyeing and printing application, and natural dye powders production. Participants also learned the standardized natural dyes extraction and application to cotton fabrics using tie-dying technique.
Meanwhile, during the hands-on demonstration session, natural dyes such as coconut husk, annatto seeds, mahogany bark, talisay leaves, and Philippine indigo were used to create a range of colors and designs. Participants had hands-on opportunities to create their own dyed fabrics, gaining a firsthand understanding of the techniques involved.
As the workshop concluded, the collaborative effort between DOST-PTRI and UN-WHO highlighted their shared commitment to sustainability and the exchange of knowledge across borders. This initiative marks a significant step towards integrating traditional expertise with global health and environmental objectives, reinforcing the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration in addressing contemporary challenges.
