The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) organized a 3rd Philippine Handloom Weaving Conference (PHWC) - Regional Weaver's Forum in Ilocos Region as part of the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation (RSTW) Region 1 held at Paoay Lake JLP Resort and Hotel, Paoay, Ilocos Norte on July 5, 2024.

This forum served as a platform to celebrate and promote the rich tradition of Inabel handloom weaving in the Ilocos Region, bringing together weavers, artisans, researchers, and enthusiasts to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and showcase the beauty and craftsmanship of the Ilocandia handwoven textiles.

Moreover, the visit aligned with the goal of the recently concluded Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing between DOST-PTRI and The Hinabi Project, which has a key focus on the digitalization of Philippine textiles.

During the forum, various topics related to the handloom weaving ecosystem were discussed, including textile sustainability, counterfeiting, best practices, and trade & business perspectives, to foster a deeper understanding of industry challenges and opportunities while empowering weavers with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complex landscape of the textile industry in the region.

Through the PHWC, the DOST-PTRI aimed to revitalize and promote the cultural heritage of handloom weaving, support the livelihoods of local weavers, and foster collaboration and innovation in the field of traditional textile production.

Stay tuned for the next Regional Weaver's Forum, as we bring the celebration of handloom weaving to another region!
