The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), in collaboration with the office of former Congressman Jose Francisco “Kiko” Bantug Benitez, now the 15th Director General of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), recently conducted a Basic Handloom Weaving training program for 17 constituents from various barangays in Talisay City. The initiative aims to broaden the community's knowledge in textile arts and provide additional income opportunities through handloom weaving.

The training utilized three handloom machines and accessories donated by DOST-PTRI, highlighting the commitment of both organizations to support the local textile industry. Participants engaged in hands-on learning, acquiring essential skills in weaving techniques that have been part of the region's cultural heritage.

DOST-PTRI officials emphasized the significance of such training programs in promoting sustainable practices within the textile sector. The initiative aligns with DG Benitez's vision of enhancing the skills and knowledge of constituents in the 3rd District of Negros Occidental, promoting economic development through education and traditional crafts.

As the participants complete their training, they are expected to contribute to the local economy while fostering a renewed appreciation for Philippine textiles. The program not only aims to sustain the tradition of handloom weaving but also to inspire future generations to explore and innovate within this cultural practice.
