The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) joined the closing activities of the 2024 World Ikat Textile Symposium (WITS) with a cultural immersion at the Winaca Eco-Cultural Village and Forest Homes in Benguet. This event celebrated the artistry and traditions of weavers and artisans through live demonstrations of weaving techniques.

During the closing ceremony, Ms. Anna India Legaspi, a master piña weaver and partner of the Institute known for Aklan’s renowned handwoven piña fabrics, was honored with the Asia-Pacific Region Craft Master Award and the 2024 Artisan of the Year award, conferred by the World Crafts Council.

Additionally, a book entitled "Narda: From Nursing to Weaving My Dream" was launched. It narrates the inspiring journey of Leonarda “Narda” Capuyan, who dreamed of bringing the Ikat Symposium to the Cordillera after contributing to its planning 25 years ago in Malaysia. Although Narda was unable to realize this vision herself, her daughter, Lucia Capuyan, fulfilled her dream and made it a reality.

Legaspi and Capuyan are both technology adopters of the DOST-PTRI’s Natural Dyes program. Through the Institute’s initiative, they were trained in natural dyeing techniques, which they have successfully integrated into their handwoven products, enhancing the quality and appeal of their crafts in the market.

The Institute also took the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with the weavers present at the event. The discussions focused on the current status and challenges faced by local weavers and explored ways in which the Institute could support and uplift the weaving community.

This initiative underscores DOST-PTRI's commitment to preserving and promoting Philippine weaving traditions while addressing the needs and aspirations of the artisans who keep these traditions alive.
