The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) showcased its textile technologies and Inabel fabrics in the recently concluded KatHABI Fashion Show at the Malacañang of the North in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, on July 4, 2024. This event was part of the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW), organized by the DOST 1 - Department of Science and Technology Regional Office No. 1.
One of the highlights of the fashion show was the collection by Ilokano fashion designer Amor Albano, who skillfully integrated Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTFs) made from abaca, pineapple leaf, and bamboo fibers, developed by DOST-PTRI. Additionally, Albano showcased the famous Ilocano Inabel fabrics, woven by artisans from the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) Cultural Center.
Albano's collection celebrated the richness of Ilocano craftsmanship and honored the 100th birthday of GAMABA awardee or National Living Treasure Magdalena Gamayo, a master weaver from Ilocos Norte known for her expertise in traditional "inabel" weaving.
The fashion show also featured the latest innovations in textiles and apparel using PTFs developed through DOST-PTRI technologies. Notable collections came from Albert Andrada Luxewear, Hiraya Lizan Collection, Nina Inabel, JC Buendia, Avel Bacudio, Unica Hija by BAYO, the DFDC - Davao Fashion Design Council, and the Catanduanes State University Garments, Fashion, and Design students.
