Handloom weaving of binakol, an Ilocano traditional weave design, was among the highlights of the last day of Likhang Habi: Market Encounter 2 on October 24, 2009 in Makati City.
Engr. Jovita Hayin, supervising science research specialist at the Philippine Textile Research Institute, demonstrated the use of jack-type handloom, a four- to six-harness device producing up to six weft patterns, before shoppers, students, visitors, and participants in this two-day event, which gathered producers and vendors of textiles embellished with traditional weave designs from abel of Ilocos and tiniri of Abra to South Cotabato’s tinalak and Maguindanao’s inaul.
Hosted by the Yuchengco Museum, Likhang Habi showcased an exhibit of antique, indigenous fabrics and a lecture on Philippine textile weaving tradition. (Arlene R. Obmerga, S&T Media Service)
