In a significant move to support the local weaving and artisan communities, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) conducted a dialogue with weavers and artisans during the Likha 3: Likha Ko, Lahi Ko event at Forum 2 and 3 of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on June 10, 2024.
The Likha 3 event, which celebrates Filipino craftsmanship and heritage, gathered weavers and artisans from various regions, showcasing their unique products and skills. DOST-PTRI staff engaged directly with these artisans to identify specific needs and explore ways the institute can offer support.
The dialogue involved discussions with the booth exhibitors to gather insights into their challenges and areas where DOST-PTRI can make a meaningful impact. Key areas of interest included access to modern weaving technologies, sustainable raw materials, natural dyeing, and skill development programs.
Many artisans expressed the need for improved access to weaving technologies that could enhance productivity and product quality. They also highlighted the necessity for sustainable and locally-sourced raw materials to ensure the longevity and environmental friendliness of their crafts.
Furthermore, the dialogue with the weavers conducted at Likha 3 marks a significant step towards a stronger partnership between DOST-PTRI and the local artisan community, aiming to foster growth, innovation, and sustainability in the Philippine textile industry.
