In a significant step toward promoting Philippine textiles in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) joined the Technology Fora Caravan: S&T Innovations for Community Competitiveness and Sustainability during the 2024 Bangsamoro Science and Technology Week (BSTW). The event was held at Cotabato State University in Cotabato City, Maguindanao.
The Institute made its mark during Fora 1, which focused on Technology-Based Solutions for an Inclusive Textile Industry in Bangsamoro. It was the Institute’s first-ever participation in BSTW, underscoring its commitment to supporting the region's burgeoning textile industry.
DOST-PTRI Representative, Ms. Evangeline Flor P. Manalang, Chief Science Research Specialist of the Technical Services Division, introduced DOST-PTRI’s suite of textile technologies and services to the Bangsamoro community. Her presentation emphasized the Institute's innovations in textile production and their potential to boost the local economy. These advancements could provide sustainable opportunities for BARMM, especially for its weaving and indigenous textile sectors, helping them become more competitive in both national and international markets.
DOST-PTRI's participation in BSTW is seen as a stepping stone for future collaborations with the Bangsamoro community, aiming to foster inclusive growth through textile innovations tailored to the needs of the region. The Institute hopes that by empowering local textile producers, BARMM can unlock new economic opportunities and promote sustainable growth across its communities.
