The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) participated in the 3rd International Conference on Materials Science and Engineering in the Philippines (ICMSEP), co-located with the 2024 International Conference on Microscopy and Microanalysis (ICMM), the 2024 Regional Conference on Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering (RCMMME), and the 2024 AUN/SEED-Net Regional Conference on Materials Engineering (RCME), held at Hotel Casiana in Tagaytay on October 29-30, 2024.
The Institute showcased various studies on textile development and innovation through the lens of materials science and engineering. Three poster presentations highlighted studies on lignin-reinforced filament yarns, the filtration properties of melt-blown polypropylene, and engineered woven fabrics for footwear uppers.
The study titled "Materials Selection of Philippine Natural Textile Fiber-based Yarn for Knitting through TOPSIS and COPRAS," authored by Ms. Jonalyn S. Enriquez, Ms. Paula Bianca C. Gonzales, Mr. Audric Zuriel C. Cruz, Ms. Jenneli E. Caya, and Dr. Julius L. Leaño under the Shoes and Footwear Accessories R&D on Textile-based Omnibus Solutions (SAFATOS) Program, was awarded Best Oral Presentation during the Innovations in Materials Processing and Engineering Parallel Session.
Other sessions focused on environmental sustainability, waste valorization, biocomposites, functional materials, and biomedical applications. The ICMSEP, organized by the Institute of Materials Engineers of the Philippines (IMEP), brought together local and international researchers, scientists, and stakeholders in the field of materials science and engineering. With DOST-PTRI's participation, textile innovation was further recognized as a vital field within materials science and engineering.
