In a significant stride toward sustainable textile innovation and regional development, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Davao del Norte State College (DNSC) and DOST Region XI to establish the Natural Textile Fiber Innovation Hub (NTFIH) in Davao del Norte. The collaboration was formalized during the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) held at Abreeza Mall, Davao City, Davao del Sur on November 11, 2024.

The NTFIH is set to become a key driver in the local textile industry by transforming indigenous resources, including banana fibers and other locally sourced materials, into high-quality treated fibers. This initiative will not only bolster environmental sustainability but also create new economic opportunities for local communities. The facility aims to process 10 to 40 kilograms of treated fibers daily, contributing to the growth of a textile ecosystem rooted in eco-friendly practices and value-added materials.

The collaboration among DOST-PTRI, DNSC, and DOST Region XI underscores a shared commitment to regional economic empowerment, job creation, and environmental responsibility. By championing the use of local resources, the NTFIH project envisions a vibrant, sustainable textile industry that empowers communities, generates employment, and enhances the Philippines' competitiveness in the global textile market.

As the project takes root in Davao del Norte, the DOST-PTRI and its partners envision a ripple effect throughout the industry, inspiring similar initiatives nationwide. The establishment of the NTFIH exemplifies how strategic collaboration and innovation can transform local economies, harnessing the potential of natural resources to uplift communities and pave the way for a more sustainable textile industry in the Philippines.
