PHILIPPINE TROPICAL FABRICS MONTH 2022 CELEBRATES THE CREATIVE, SUSTAINABLE, AND INCLUSIVE LOCAL TEXTILE INDUSTRY

The month of January truly gives renewed hope and positivity to everyone. This is the very hope of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) as it kicks off the year with the annual celebration of the Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) Month. Quite appropriately, January also marks the founding anniversary of the Philippine Textile Research Institute and this year, the Institute celebrates 55 years since its foundation.
This year’s celebration carries the theme, “Reexamining PTF Towards Creativity, Sustainability, and Inclusivity of the Philippine Textile Industry”. The DOST- Philippine Textile Research Institute is tasked under Proclamation No. 313 s. 2012, to promote the judicious use of indigenous textiles in the country with the use of abaca, banana, pineapple leaves, and Philippine silk, to sustain increased interest, and active participation in our local tropical fabric developments.
A decade into its implementation, PTF development and promotions continue to show manifold potentials and opportunities especially for farmers and processors of natural textile fibers from pineapple, banana, abaca, and Philippine silk; for textile millers, handloom weavers, and uniform producers. Although the proclamation was made to fully support the PTF Law, the goal of producing PTF does not end with the dressing up of all local civil servants in uniforms made of PTF alone. For DOST-PTRI, the goal is to mainstream the use of PTF by all Filipinos for all textile applications with fabric that is 100% sourced, made, and finished in the country. As the lead agency for the observance of PTF Month, the DOST-PTRI enjoins everyone to participate in its month-long PTF-related activities.
Eight (8) TELA Sessions, with details above, were held from January 11 to January 21, to lead up to the 2022 TELA Conference which will be held on January 27, 2022. The Conference theme is “Weaving a Creative, Sustainable, and Inclusive Future of Philippine Textiles, Today”.
In addition to these sessions, the 3rd Philippine Silk Summit will be undertaken on January 25, 2022. This will be a virtual convergence among industry stakeholders to showcase the accomplishments of the Philippine Silk Road Program through Science & Technology. The Summit will include the virtual launch of the first multi-end silk processing facility Mindanao, the unveiling of the SEDA Pilipinas brand, its materials and products, and the holding of Silk Stakeholders’ forum.
