The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) led and convened various agencies for the 4th Philippine Handloom Weaving Interagency Meeting, held on July 29, 2024. This event, hosted by the Regional Operations Group (ROG) under the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), gathered key stakeholders to discuss initiatives aimed at safeguarding and enhancing this vital sector of Philippine culture and tradition.
Central to the discussions was the finalization of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that aims to establish the National Handloom Weaving Development Council (NHWDC). This council is envisioned as a strategic body to tackle the sector's difficulties and foster solutions that will bolster the handloom weaving industry's sustainability and growth.
Senate Bill (SB) 241, known as "An Act Providing for the Development and Protection of the Philippine Handloom Weaving Industry," served as a backdrop to the meeting's deliberations. The bill highlights the cultural and economic significance of the handloom weaving industry, while also addressing the need for comprehensive support and protection.
