The Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) is spotlighting its textile technologies at the ongoing 2024 Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR). Organized by the Government of the Philippines in partnership with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the event is being held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City, running from October 14 to 18, 2024.
This high-profile conference, the largest regional platform for disaster risk reduction, is expected to gather around 3,000 delegates, including ministers, high-level officials, and expert practitioners from across the Asia-Pacific region. The event aims to strengthen collective efforts in minimizing disaster risks and building resilience against future challenges.
DOST-PTRI has been invited to participate as an exhibitor in the Philippine Pavilion, a showcase of Filipino innovation. The institute's presentation offers delegates a unique glimpse into the nation's advancements in sustainable textiles.
At the forefront of DOST-PTRI’s exhibit is the KAWAYARN, also known as Bamboo Textiles PH Program, which highlights the use of bamboo fibers in creating eco-friendly fabrics. The display features the process of transforming bamboo from raw fiber into a fully developed, sustainable textile. Delegates can explore bamboo-blended yarns, handwoven and machine-woven fabrics, as well as wearables designed by Filipino-American designer Anthony Cruz Legarda. Also on display are a variety of accessories, including bags, footwear, and home textiles.
Another key feature of DOST-PTRI’s exhibit was the bamboo-based Battle Dress Uniform (BDU), made from textile fibers derived from Bambusa blumeana, or Kawayang Tinik. The bamboo was sourced from partner farmers in La Union and transformed into fabric that meets the demands of military use. The fabric was screen-printed with camouflage patterns developed by DOST-PTRI in collaboration with a local textile finishing mill. This eco-friendly alternative emphasizes sustainability without sacrificing the durability required for field uniforms.
Through the KatHABI Textile Innovation Exhibition, DOST-PTRI showcases Filipino craftsmanship and innovation in textiles. The exhibit highlights the country’s advancements in sustainable fabrics, from bamboo-based textiles to handwoven products. By participating in the APMCDRR, the Philippines emphasizes its role as a leader in textile innovation, offering a high-value experience to international delegates and spotlighting the nation’s cutting-edge technologies.
