The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) participated in a massive bamboo planting event on October 17, 2024, as part of the “KAWAYANIHAN: A Circular Economy Movement.” Organized by DOST Region 10, the initiative aims to set a Guinness World Record (GWR) for the "Most People Planting Bamboo Simultaneously" across multiple venues in Mindanao, while also raising awareness on bamboo’s role in promoting circular economy, climate resilience, and sustainability.
The DOST-PTRI Team was assigned to Brgy. Lanise, Claveria, Misamis Oriental, one of 19 designated planting sites. At exactly 9:00 AM, participants planted 20,000 bamboo propagules across these locations. The effort involved a coordinated collaboration among more than 50 institutions, bringing together around 4,500 participants in total.
The planted bamboos were geotagged to monitor growth, ensuring they serve as future sources of raw materials for industries, including potential uses in sustainable textile production. This large-scale event highlights the growing commitment across Mindanao to integrate bamboo into its development strategies for environmental and economic benefits.
Participants included government agencies, local government units, farmer cooperatives, non-profit organizations, and private sector companies. Their collective efforts underscore the region's push toward sustainable practices that support both environmental and economic goals, with bamboo playing a crucial role in building a climate-resilient Mindanao.
