EMPOWERING INNOVATION: DOST-PTRI SHOWCASES CUTTING-EDGE TEXTILE TECHNOLOGIES AT 'ABEL TI ABRA' EVENT

In support of the development of an economically productive and innovative Philippine Textile Industry, the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) has deployed technology exhibit booths for natural textile fibers and dyes through its “FRONTIER: Fostering the Revitalization of Nascent Textile Innovation Ecosystems in the Regions Program” during the “Abel ti Abra: Where Tradition Meets Innovation” event on 26 February 2024 held at Governor Andres Bernos Memorial Gymnasium, University of Abra, Bangued Campus.
Through the collaborations of the Department of Science and Technology - Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR), the Abra State Institute of Science and Technology (ASIST), the Asian Livelihood Network (ALN), and the DOST-PTRI, the event celebrated the rich heritage of weaving materials and abundance of natural fibers and dye sources from Abra while it emphasized the importance of equipping the industry to face the challenges and seize the opportunities of the present and the future
The Natural Textile Fiber Team, headed by Mr. Karl Marx Lenin A. Florante, Science Research Specialist I, showcased different types of fiber producing bamboo species, fiber samples for yarn and textile production, and different bamboo textile fiber products and technologies.
The NatDyes Team, led by Ms. Kimberly P. Viron, Science Research Specialist II, highlighted naturally dyed outputs from its recent community training conducted together with identified stakeholders by the ASIST. The team’s exhibit has also included other textile products that illustrated the various applications of the DOST-PTRI’s natural colorant technologies.
Dr. Leaño also presented the Spinning Innovations for Philippine Textiles using Natural Materials during the TUPV Technology Convention 2024 with the theme "Sustainable Innovations through Emerging Technologies in Agriculture, Aquaculture, and Natural Resources (AANR)." The Director emphasized the potential of Silk as an additional source of income for farmers, Local Government Units, and Private Sectors.
The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Gregorio T. Turqueza, Jr., President of ASIST, and Dr. Nancy A. Bantog, Regional Director of DOST-CAR. The opening message of Dr. Turqueza noted the pivotal role of the DOST-PTRI in ensuring that the legacy of Abra weaves and textiles continues. In her keynote speech, Dr. Bantog acknowledged the part that the DOST-PTRI plays in promoting the sustainable growth and development of the textile industry in the region.
