The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), in collaboration with the Provincial Science and Technology Office-Cagayan and the Local Government Unit of Claveria, conducted a training workshop focused on Natural Dye Extraction and Synthetic Dyeing Techniques for Cellulosic Fibers. This training held at Claveria, Cagayan from October 15-17, 2024, aimed to enhance the skills of local farmers and handicraft weavers, enabling them to improve the quality and marketability of their abaca fiber products.
The three-day training provided participants with in-depth knowledge and practical experience in dyeing techniques. It began with essential pre-treatment processes to prepare abaca fibers for dye application. Participants explored natural dye extraction from locally sourced materials, including mahogany, annatto, yellow ginger, talisay, and coconut. This hands-on experience allowed them to see the potential of natural resources in creating vibrant colors.
In addition to natural dyes, the training also covered the application of synthetic dyes. This dual approach provided participants with a wider range of options for enhancing the visual appeal of their textiles. Synthetic dyes can offer brighter, more consistent colors that may appeal to a broader market.
The workshop also aimed to promote sustainable practices within the local textile industry, ensuring that traditional methods coexist with modern techniques. Participants left the training with new insights and techniques, empowered to enhance their crafts and explore new market opportunities.
