The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) marked its presence at the 14th Likhang Habi Market Fair, a cornerstone event for Philippine textile artisans, weavers, and industry leaders. Held on October 18, 2024, at the Glorietta Activity Center, Makati City, the fair, organized by HABI: The Philippine Textile Council, underscores a renewed commitment to safeguarding and celebrating the country's rich textile traditions through innovation and research.

This year’s fair, themed “Earth to Loom: Celebrating Natural Dyes in Philippine Textiles,” emphasized the importance of natural dyes in the preservation of the country’s cultural heritage and their growing role in sustainable textile production. The event brought together artisans, industry leaders, and government representatives to discuss and promote eco-friendly alternatives in textile manufacturing.

DOST-PTRI representative Ms. Kimberly P. Viron, Science Research Specialist II, led the discussion on Philippine Natural Dyes. Her presentation, part of DOST-PTRI's Natural Dyes and Colorants Program, offered attendees an in-depth understanding of the science behind natural dye extraction, their sources, and their applications.

She explained the process of extracting dyes from various natural materials such as Indigo plants, Talisay leaves, Annatto seeds, Mahogany bark, and Coconut husks. These dyes, which have been used in indigenous Filipino communities for centuries, are being reintroduced as sustainable alternatives to synthetic dyes in a wide range of industries.

Ms. Viron also highlighted the competitive advantages of natural dyes, particularly their versatility and market potential. She emphasized that Natural Dyes are not just for textiles; they’re being applied in food, personal care, cosmetics, and smart packaging.

Meanwhile, Dr. Julius L. Leaño, Jr., Director IV of DOST-PTRI, was also present at the event, immersing himself in dialogues with local weavers and artisans. His visit to the various booths, which showcased handwoven textile products from across the Philippines, reinforced the Institute's dedication to supporting local communities.

The DOST-PTRI’s involvement in the fair underscores the Institute’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable practices in the textile industry. With the Natural Dyes and Colorants Program, the Institute is leading initiatives to upscale natural dye production and expand its applications across various sectors.
