The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) recently held the Philippine Textile Technology Forum in celebration of the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week on November 11, 2024, at Abreeza Mall in Davao City. The event aimed to bring cutting-edge textile innovations to a wider audience and engage potential collaborators to adopt and integrate these technologies.
The forum highlighted several key areas of the Institute's textile research and development, including Natural Textile Fibers, Bamboo Textiles, Natural Dyes, and the Shoes and Footwear Accessories from the R&D on Textile-based Omnibus Solutions (SAFATOS) Program. These advancements are poised to enhance the Philippines’ textile industry by promoting sustainable materials and processes.
One of the focal points of the event was the Natural Textile Fiber technology, which emphasizes the potential of indigenous fibers such as abaca, pineapple, and silk, offering eco-friendly alternatives to conventional synthetic textiles. Bamboo Textile Fiber technology was also showcased, demonstrating its versatility as a sustainable material for fabric production.
Additionally, the forum spotlighted the Natural Dyes program, which promotes the use of plant-based dyes as an environmentally conscious alternative to synthetic chemical dyes, thereby supporting the country's rich heritage in natural colorants. The DOST-PTRI’s SAFATOS program was also discussed with the aim of establishing a sustainable textile-footwear ecosystem, the program addresses the specific needs of the industry, from natural fiber-based materials to national footwear sizing systems.
This initiative marks a step forward in the country’s ongoing efforts to integrate science and technology into traditional industries, ensuring a more sustainable future for the Philippine textile sector.
