The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) marked the opening of the 2024 Philippine Textile Congress with a Textile Innovation Exhibit on November 14, 2024. Held at the Ballroom Foyer of Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City, the event celebrated the fusion of artistry and innovation in the country’s textile and fashion industry.

At the heart of the exhibit was the Stitch-Off: Urban Vibe Competition, showcasing collections from the Top 18 finalists representing 14 schools nationwide. These emerging student-designers demonstrated exceptional creativity and technical skill in crafting runway-ready ensembles and urban wear-themed collections. Each look was made from Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) and locally sourced handwoven textiles, embodying inclusivity across masculine, feminine, children’s, curvy, and androgynous styles.

Another exhibit highlight was a captivating collection of naturally-dyed garments designed by students from De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde. Using the advanced Natural Dyes Technology developed by DOST-PTRI, the garments showcased vibrant hues derived from local plant-based sources. Complementing the garments were fabric art installations and panels, further illustrating the versatility and potential of natural dyes in modern textile applications.

The Textile Innovation Exhibit exemplified DOST-PTRI’s commitment to advancing the Philippine textile industry through science, technology, and innovation. Attendees from various sectors, including policymakers, academes, and industry leaders, expressed optimism for the role of textile innovation in fostering economic sustainability and preserving the nation’s cultural heritage.
