The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) brought the vibrant tradition of natural dyeing to life with the "Vibrant Hues of Heritage: Abaca Natural Dyeing Workshop" as part of the 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW). Held at the Juanito Bruno Gymnasium of Western Mindanao State University in Baliwasan, Zamboanga City, the workshop aimed to combine cultural preservation and sustainable textile innovation.
The event welcomed second-year Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology students majoring in Garments and Textile Technology from the Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University (ZPPSU). This interactive learning opportunity introduced participants to the process of using natural, eco-friendly dye sources to color abaca, a durable fiber indigenous to the Philippines and globally recognized for its resilience.
The workshop provided a platform for hands-on demonstrations, enabling students to explore how vibrant, organic colors can be extracted from locally available plants. Participants transformed raw abaca fibers into colorful materials, deepening their appreciation for natural dyes' artistic and cultural significance.
Beyond artistic exploration, the workshop underscored the importance of sustainable practices in textile production. By promoting the use of renewable resources like abaca and natural dyes, DOST-PTRI emphasized the potential of eco-conscious innovations in strengthening the local textile industry while honoring Filipino heritage.
This initiative aligns with RSTW's overarching theme of advancing science, technology, and innovation to foster regional progress. The workshop not only enriched students' technical skills but also highlighted the role of traditional craftsmanship in shaping a sustainable future for Philippine textiles. As the Zamboanga Peninsula celebrates the fusion of culture and innovation, events like this ensure that the region’s rich heritage continues to inspire the next generation of designers and artisans.
