OISCA International and DOST-PTRI Align Efforts to Boost PH Silk Industry

Mr. Yasuo Mandai, the new representative of OISCA International, visited the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute for a courtesy meeting with Director Julius L. Leaño Jr. Mr. Mandai presented the activities for the year 2025-2026 of the sericulture project funded by the Japan Government through the Japan Embassy in the Philippines, which include skills training by a Japanese sericulture expert to seri-farmers, technicians and silk project coordinators from partner SUCs.

At least 30 new and potential serifarmers will be provided the opportunity to receive immersive training in the OISCA Negros silk facility in close coordination with DOST-PTRI’s Silk Research and Innovation Center – Misamis Oriental. Mr. Mandai also committed to preparing another set of proposals for 2026-2027, which may include support for silkworm rearing houses in Misamis Oriental, Benguet and Nueva Vizcaya.

Dr. Leaño presented the SEDA Pilipinas program and directions leading to the alignment of support from partner organizations such as OISCA International, to where the silk processing lines are strategically located, including but not limited to Benguet, Central Luzon, Northern Mindanao, and Western Visayas.

The partnership between DOST-PTRI and OISCA International is a strategic collaboration to support the rural communities through the continued support towards the development and production of the Philippine silk industry.
