As part of the 2024 National Intellectual Property Month (NIPM) with the theme, 'IP and the SDGs: Building our common future with innovation and creativity,' the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) participated by mounting an exhibition for the 2024 Gawad Yamang Isip (GYI) Awards Night, organized by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) at Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City on April 29, 2024. 

Highlights of the exhibit included textile innovations from DOST-PTRI's registered patent "Blended Spun Yarns Containing Indigenous Fibers and Fabrics Made Therefrom," which is directed towards blended yarns made from a mixture of indigenous fibers, particularly pineapple, banana, or abaca fiber, with synthetic and/or other natural plant fibers spun in the ring spinning using either cotton or semi-worsted system.  

Moreover, High-blend Natural Textile Fiber/Lyocell Yarns were also showcased on the exhibit which has garnered attention for its eco-friendly properties. This material, derived from natural sources, offers high value and it's poised to meet the rising demand from apparel companies aiming to reduce their carbon footprint. Bamboo textile products were also featured in the exhibit, with the institute currently filing for the registration of its patent.  

This event was led by Atty. Rowel S. Barba, Director General, and Atty. Ann Claire C. Cabochan, Deputy Director General for Operations of IPOPHL, along with the Directors of various bureaus under IPOPHL. Also in attendance were Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin, Alfredo S. Pascual, Secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry, Arsenio M. Balisacan, Secretary of the National Economic and Development Authority, Hon. Rolando G. Ubatay, Mayor of Lumban, Laguna, and Dr. Julius L. Leaño Jr., Director IV of DOST-PTRI. 

Furthermore, the GYI Awards will serve as a guide, highlighting the significant impact of Filipino innovation and creativity as essential elements in achieving the SDGs. Just like the DOST-PTRI registered patent blended spun yarns, which directly contribute to SDGs 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 17. By promoting decent work, economic growth, innovation, equality, sustainable consumption and production, climate action, and partnerships, DOST-PTRI's research not only advances the textile industry but also supports environmental and social goals for a sustainable future.
