The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) spearheaded the Zamboanga Peninsula Textile Innovation Dialogue on November 20, 2024, as part of the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) in Zamboanga Peninsula. Held at Western Mindanao State University in Baliwasan, Zamboanga City, the event sought to strengthen the region’s textile industry by fostering collaboration, sharing expertise, and engaging local communities in its growth.

Key objectives of the dialogue included identifying partnership opportunities, establishing collaborative programs among government, industry, and academic stakeholders, and promoting community participation. The Institute also showcased its latest textile technologies and gathered valuable feedback to align its initiatives with industry needs and growth potential.

The event brought together diverse participants, including representatives from DOST Regional Office No. IX, the Department of Tourism (DOT) Regional Office No. IX, the Zamboanga City local government, and Western Mindanao State University. Notably, the dialogue highlighted the cultural richness of the region by involving renowned Yakan weaving communities, such as Angie’s Yakan Handloom Weaving, Likhang Yakan Handloom Woven Products, Tuwas Yakan, and Yakan Weavers Albarakkattu.

Through initiatives like the Zamboanga Peninsula Textile Innovation Dialogue, DOST-PTRI aims to foster a sustainable, inclusive, and innovative textile industry that not only boosts economic growth but also celebrates the region's unique cultural heritage.
