Pinay Researcher of DOST-PTRI Showcases Philippine Natural Dye Innovations at UN CSTD Exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland
The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) participates in the Women in Science and Innovation Exhibition during the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UN CSTD) in Geneva, Switzerland. Representing the Institute is Ms. Kimberly Viron, Project Leader and Science Research Specialist II, who presents the research and development on Philippine natural dyes and eco-textile finishing.

Ms. Viron presented DOST-PTRI’s ongoing efforts to advance sustainable textile solutions through the Philippine Natural Dyes and Colorants R&D Program. The initiative highlights the use of coffee pulp, a by-product of the Philippine coffee industry, as a source of natural dye and biochar-based black pigment for textile printing. This innovative approach promotes circularity and reduces waste while supporting the preservation of traditional textile techniques.
The exhibit illustrated the full value chain of natural dye innovation—from waste pulp processing and biochar characterization to textile color application and evaluation. It also emphasized the role of science and technology in countryside development, livelihood creation, and women empowerment, particularly among local weaving communities.
Aligned with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Textile Initiative, the program strengthens the global call for sustainable and inclusive practices in the textile sector. It also contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 5, 12, and 13—gender equality, responsible production, and climate action.
Through this international platform, DOST-PTRI reinforces its commitment to pioneering eco-innovations rooted in Filipino tradition and ingenuity.
